independent academic research reveals the impact of stand Tall

The Stand Tall one-day event, in both the live and online streamed format, is proving to change the outlook and lives of the youth in Australia and impact the culture in schools.

The International Research Centre for Youth Futures at the University of Technology (UTS), Sydney, undertook both qualitative and quantitative research into the effectiveness of the 2019 Stand Tall event.

The UTS research revealed that the Stand Tall event was demonstrably successful, with over 74% of students surveyed reporting that at least one of the speakers directly affected them.

Post the event, there was improvement in students’ scores relating to key components of hope, in comparison to scores pre the event. A significant number of students felt more hopeful for the future. Results also showed a reduction in students’ worry after the event.

It was clear to researchers that the unique formula of inspirational speakers, contemporary music and high audience interaction works to get across the key messages of hope, resilience, inspiration and motivation.

Researchers concluded that students clearly love the day and most importantly, it changes them for the better and for the future.

Emeritus Professor Rosemary Johnston, Leader of the UTS study into the effectiveness of Stand Tall 2019

‘The results show conclusively that Stand Tall is achieving its objective of building hope in the lives of young Australians. The teachers who bring the students are unanimous that Stand Tall meets its high expectations and every single teacher would recommend Stand Tall to other schools.’

The Impact is long lasting

The UTS researchers noted that much qualitative data, including unsolicited emails, messages and reports from teachers, describe notable and ongoing changes in the attitudes and behaviours of both recent and past attendees, serving as indicators of the event’s impact and ongoing influence. Secondary teachers have written to Stand Tall over the years, commenting that the effect of the event is far reaching across school groups: 'It has affected everybody. Students return with strong anti-bullying attitudes that affects their peer groups and changes the whole culture of the school.'
