Hi Everybody,

I am Derek Rabelo, one of the Stand Tall Ambassadors.

It is an honour for me to tell you about my life story and my daily life here, and in the next upcoming blogs.

As some of you may already know, I was born blind, but didn’t let my disability stop me from surfing some of the biggest and most dangerous waves in the world.

Actually, I don’t like to call it a disability, because if you think about it, it would mean that I am not able.

Able to do what? To see? Ok, I may not see with my eyes, but I see in a different way, using my other senses. Which just means that I see differently. I see with my hands, my ears, my nose and so much more.

I am able! I am able to do anything. At least, that’s what I believe. It is you who stops you from being able to do things. If you believe in yourself, then you are able!

In these times, it is challenging to do what you like to do with this whole Coronavirus thing going on. I am living in Brazil and here, nobody is allowed to do anything anymore. Stores are closed and you aren’t permitted to go to the beach or a park. Of course this is a struggle for me not to surf. People have been taken out of the water from the police on a jet ski. But of course, the government is just trying to keep everybody safe.

I would like to encourage you guys, if you also feel like you’re in a prison, try to stay active at home. Or go outside by yourself. For a walk, run or bike ride. I believe that fresh air, some sunlight and activity will help our immune system be strong.

Have a great week and stay healthy!

Derek
